MoCo Streets Turn Into 'Neighborhood Greenways' During Pandemic

SILVER SPRING, MD — Holdridge Road and Grove Street in Montgomery County have been temporarily transformed into "neighborhood greenways" — or roadways with low car volumes where pedestrians and bicyclists are given priority. Launched Friday, the county transportation department's "Shared Streets" initiative modified: 1.2 miles of Holdridge Road in Aspen HillFrom Olympic Street to Urbana Drive0.5 miles of Grove Street in Silver SpringFrom Bonifant Street to Sligo Avenue"Our engineers and planners have been developing neighborhood greenway concepts for some time and now we are excited to use those plans to create immediate relief for our residents seeking more space for biking, walking and other active uses of neighborhood streets," said MCDOT Director Chris Conklin. While these "neighborhood greenways" are in use, residents must comply with county and state coronavirus guidelines. Don't gather in groups of 10 or more, wear a face covering, cough/sneeze into your elbow, and keep at least six feet of distance from anyone who isn't part of your household.
