SILVER SPRING, MD — The Montgomery County Council is seeking applicants for its Commission on Redistricting. The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 26, 2020. The positions must be filled by Feb. 1, 2021. "The Montgomery County Charter states that the county shall be divided into five Council districts for the purpose of nominating and electing five members of the Council. Each district shall be compact in form and be composed of adjoining territory," officials said in a statement. The new districts will be in effect for the Council's 2024 election. The Commission will be composed of 11 registered voters who live in the county. Up to four of those members must belong to a political party that polled at least 15 percent of the total vote cast for all County Council candidates in the last regular election. At least one member of the Commission must reside in each Council district. Elected officials cannot be appointed to the Commission. By Nov. 15, 2021, the Commission will present a plan of Council districts, together with a report explaining the plan to the Council. Within 30 days after receiving the plan, the Council will hold a public hearing on it. If no other law re-establishing Council boundaries are presented within 90 days, the Commission's plan, as submitted, will become law.
