Description
Students will learn the fundamental language, tools, and core techniques involved in creating book structures. Introduction to Bookbinding is a two-day exploration into bookbinding fundamentals such as rounding, backing, and other engineering essentials. Using traditional hand tools, Edward Patrick Kranz will demonstrate the binding of a functional book built on a solid foundation of traditional forwarding skills. Saturday, June 18th, (9:00 AM - 5:00 PM) Sunday, June 19th (9 AM - 5 PM) Brown bag it! We will take a 30-minute lunch each day with a few breaks throughout the day. Over two days, students will learn the following skills and related vocabulary: Throughout the workshop: History and humorBookbinding terminologyWorkshop Day 1: Tools of the trade, what you need and what you can do withoutMaterials selectionPaper grain; what it is, how to find it, and why it’s importantFolding signatures, marking up, and punching signaturesEndsheets essentials for an easy opening booksewing techniquesGluing up, rounding, backing, and lining the spineWorkshop Day 2: Build the caseCasing in the textblockThe book press & the DIY home book pressBeyond: additional bookbinding history, techniques, and insight will be presented by Mr. KranzUpon completion, each student will have completed a handsome and functional book of their own making. Seating for this course is limited to 5 students to ensure attention is available to each aspiring bookbinder! All necessary materials and tools will be supplied at the workshop. Tool kits will be available for purchase after the workshop if you want to continue the bookbinding adventure at home. A video of the workshop will be exclusively available to the participants for 90 days after the workshop. It will then be available to our Patreon patrons. Introduction To Bookbinding is a prerequisite for all advanced binding workshops taught by Mr. Kranz at The BOOKFORGE. * Note: This is a beginner/intermediate-level workshop. some book arts knowledge or experience is recommended but not absolutely necessary. ** The BOOKFORGE has two cats and a dog in residence, they will not be present for the workshop, but I thought you might want to know as an allergy warning.
