MEDFORD, MA — The Medford City Council endorsed the historic Fair Share Amendment at their regular meeting on Monday. The city joins municipal bodies from across the Commonwealth in their endorsement of the initiative, which will appear on the November 2022 Massachusetts ballot. The Fair Share Amendment is a proposal to add a small tax on annual individual incomes exceeding $1 million. While the amendment is expected to impact fewer than 1% of taxpayers, it is projected to raise nearly $2 billion each year for investments in public education and infrastructure improvements. "The community I represent is in dire need of more state funding for our schools, roads, sidewalks, and multimodal transit access," said Zac Bears, Vice President of the Medford City Council, in a statement. "I'm excited to support the Fair Share Amendment and encourage every voter to vote yes on this essential measure in November." The Fair Share Amendment was overwhelmingly passed by the Massachusetts Legislature's Constitutional Convention in June 2021, placing the initiative on the 2022 ballot.
