Description
Press release from the Albany County Government: April 06, 2022 Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy today recognized National Public Health Week, an initiative of the American Public Health Association, which runs from April 4 through April 10 this year. He also announced that starting tomorrow Albany County would begin offering the second booster dose of the COVID vaccine for those who are eligible. Vaccinations will be available at the County Health Department at 175 Green Street in Albany between 9am and 3pm. Residents don't need an appointment and walk-ins are welcome. "I have made health equity a top priority during my time as County Executive, but the ongoing COVID pandemic has brought new attention to the serious health disparities that exist here and around the world. Asthma, diabetes and obesity impact minority communities more than others, and they also make an individual far more at risk of serious complications if infected by the coronavirus," said County Executive McCoy. "National Public Health Week offers an opportunity to recommit to the important principle of health equity and getting people connected with the programs and services that promote healthy lifestyles, prevent these underlying health conditions and improve quality of life. This week is also a moment to recognize all of the Albany County workforce who help others improve their health, including staff from the County Departments of Health, Mental Health and Aging, as well as Shaker Place Rehabilitation and Nursing Center," he continued. According to Healthy Capital District, an estimated 9,700 residents in the Capital Region have been hospitalized because of COVID-19. Additionally, 29.6% of adults in the region are considered obese, 13.2% of all adult residents have asthma, and 9.1% of all adults have diabetes. The County Executive's office has prepared a video recognizing National Public Health Week. The video highlights some of the public health initiatives that Albany County has done in the past and present. Additionally, it thanks the county workforce for their commitment to providing programs and services to Albany County residents that keep them healthy. The video can be found at the link here.
