Press release from Albuquerque Public Schools:
April 7, 2022
The Albuquerque Public Schools Board of Education voted 5-2 on Wednesday to continue to allow individual schools to decide in collaboration with students, staff, and families whether to extend their school year and, in the case of elementary schools, lengthen the school day.
Schools that consider implementing the Extended Learning Time Program, which adds 10 days to the school year, will receive support and materials to share with their communities as they decide what is best for their students. APS encourages schools that serve some of the district's most vulnerable students to present the option to their staff and communities.
State lawmakers and the New Mexico Public Education Department have asked school district's across the state to consider lengthening the school year to address learning loss resulting from the pandemic and in response to a lawsuit that found the state has failed to provide adequate programs and services for marginalized students.
APS plans to conduct a comprehensive survey of its staff, families, and community to assess opinions, concerns, and expectations for an extended school year. The data gathered in the study will help the district understand the public's desires moving forward.
