BEVERLY, MA — Beverly and Salem residents will have their chance to get rid of many household hazardous waste items — as well as old car tires — at the joint city Beverly Board of Health-organized collection. The cities have entered into a reciprocity agreement that allows each city's residents to participate in either community's collection event. The Beverly event is set for April 23 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Beverly High school parking lot. The event is rain or shine with those dropping off items asked to enter the school parking lot through the Sohier Road entrance. A $20 co-pay will help the city offset costs of the event. Proof of residency is required. No commercial waste will be accepted. Accepted items include oil-based paints, varnishes, stains, solvents, photo chemicals, pool chemicals, insecticides, herbicides, pesticides, antifreeze, transmission fluid, car batteries, propane tanks and fluorescent bulbs. Tires, 17 inches or less, will be accepted by a separate vendor but the tires must be off the rim to be taken. Items NOT ACCEPTED include Latex paint (pop lid, dry and throw away), waste oil (Beverly residents can drop off at the DPS facility on Park Street during business hours), compressed gas cylinders, ammunition, explosives, prescription medication (Medication Drop Boxes located in area Police Stations, including Beverly and Salem, and Beverly Hospital 24/7/365, Medication Disposal Day on April 30, outside at the Beverly Police Station 175 Elliott Street), syringes (drop off at Beverly Hospital Main Entrance, Sharps Kiosk 24/7/365), biological waste, radioactive waste, smoke detectors, asbestos and appliances/televisions/computer monitors and electronics. Residents are asked to keep items in their original containers with caps tightened. Do not mix chemicals and do not smoke or light flames around hazardous items.
