TOMS RIVER, NJ — A fire in a rooftop heating and air conditioning unit early Tuesday was the result of a mechanical malfunction, authorities said.
There were no injuries reported, the Toms River Bureau of Fire Prevention said.
The fire at 20 Hospital Drive, in the building just off Route 37 near Community Medical Center, was reported at 7:42 a.m. as an odor on the second floor of something burning, fire officials said.
Toms River Fire Companies No. 1 and No. 2 firefighters saw smoke and two additional ladder companies and an additional engine company responded from the East Dover, Island Heights and Pleasant Plains Fire Companies.
Firefighters found smoke coming from a fire in a blower motor and related components in the rooftop HVAC unit and quickly put it out, officials said. The building was then ventilated.
The Toms River Bureau of Fire Prevention investigated and determined it to be a mechanical malfunction of the roof top unit.
