Description

Press release from the Borough of Middlesex: April 06, 2022 WHAT'S IN A NAME? For the Borough of Middlesex – a lot. Some may say, "a rose….or Borough…by any other name…" Middlesex Borough was not always Middlesex Borough! Before the incorporation of the Borough as we know it today, the town was referred to as Lincoln. Some colloquial references would preface this, and add, "East Lincoln," however, it was never referred to that in any legal documents. The peaceful, quite, resident farmers living on the north side of the "tracks" wanted to secede from the ever-increasing industrial Piscataway. Recently having installed an Abraham Lincoln Statue in the area, it was logical to refer to this "new" section as Lincoln. A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME WOULD SMELL AS SWEET Once the Borough became incorporated in 1913 (a wonderful story for a future Middlesex Tidbit!), our name changed – again. Because of the location of our town in between so many important areas, the name Middlesex (meaning the middle sector or area) just seemed like the best choice to the governing body. And so, from a small group of residents living in Lincoln prior to 1913 to the current 13,662, (as of 2019), came the wonderful Borough we call Middlesex. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE NAME CHANGE? Do you prefer Lincoln? Middlesex? Let us know! Email the Cultural and Heritage Committee at [email protected], and we will share some fo the feedback in our next Middlesex Tidbit, scheduled for June!
