Here are the top stories today in Sacramento: A California man has pleaded guilty to buying millions of dollars worth of Apple laptops that had been stolen from major schools including Stanford University and the University of California, Berkeley as well as from Tesla Inc. According to U.S. Attorney Phillip Talbert's office, 35-year-old Philip James of Folsom entered a guilty plea Monday to transporting stolen property interstate. Court documents said that James purchased almost 1,000 stolen laptops from at least four people between October 2015 and June 2020. As part of his plea agreement, James has agreed to pay restitution of almost $2.3 million to Stanford, $256,000 to Tesla and $209,000 to U.C. Berkeley. He faces up to 10 years in prison when he is sentenced in July. (CBS San Francisco & Market Watch via MSN) Crews responded to a fire under eastbound Interstate 80 in Sacramento on Tuesday morning. The Sacramento Fire Department said the homeless debris fire was under I-80 just west of Norwood Avenue. The decking of the freeway was not damaged, and no injuries were reported. (KCRA3) A man died after being run over by a vehicle he was attempting to steal a catalytic converter from in south Sacramento early Monday morning, near Methodist Hospital on Timberlake Way. The man suffered serious injuries and was pronounced dead at an area hospital. He was identified as Jose Adolfo Rangel, 28. Sacramento police said the investigation remains active. (CBS Sacramento) "Maestro" Perez, a teacher at The Language Academy of Sacramento was awarded ABC10 Teacher of the Month and with it School's First Federal Credit Union gave his school a $1,000 check. His students are benefitting from a bilingual education and they call their teacher "amazing and fun." (ABC10) The Elk Grove Police Department is asking for the public's help as it investigates a fatal shooting early Saturday morning that left an 18-year-old dead. The victim's family identified Jaylen Tolbert as the teen who was shot and killed. He was a senior at John F. Kennedy High School in Sacramento and was set to graduate in a few months. His family said he was a "really good kid" who worked hard at school.
