CONCORD, NH — One man is in custody, and others were safely evacuated after an incident inside an apartment on Pine Street on Wednesday. Police and fire and rescue teams were sent to the area of Pine and School streets at just after 10 p.m. for a report of a man with a gun barricading himself inside a room in an apartment. A woman told police she would be waiting on a porch to speak with them. Dispatch spoke to the woman and guided her to an officer at a police cruiser. She reported the man was in distress with another man remaining inside. Police quickly blocked Centre and School streets to traffic while tenants in the building, located between both streets, were evacuated. An officer requested a shield to prepare to enter the apartment and speak to the man when they heard glass breaking from the back of the apartment. According to scanner chatter, an officer attempted to get the second man to leave the apartment. Officers attempted to reach the man by phone while surrounding the building. After about 20 minutes, at just before 10:30 p.m., the man surrendered to the police. He was taken to Concord Hospital at 10:45 p.m. While processing the scene later, police confirmed the man had a Ruger SR45 caliber handgun.
