Metro, Metrolink To Offer Free Rides, Bike Shares On Earth Day

LOS ANGELES, CA — Metro and Metrolink are offering free rides on Earth Day, Friday, April 22, the two organizations announced in news releases. Continuing a years-long tradition, Metro will offer free bus, rail, and bike shares on Earth Day, and Metrolink will provide free transportation at any of the six counties where it travels, with no tickets required. Both agencies hope to promote the more eco-friendly practices of taking public transportation. "Taking the train for free this Earth Day is a win for both riders and the environment," Metrolink CEO Darren Kettle said in a statement. "With free rides and a new expanded schedule to get everyone where they want to go, we hope people will make a little change in their travel routine to have a larger impact for air quality in southern California." In addition to free trips, riders can also visit Metrolink's Earth Day webpage, and make a #takethetrain pledge to be entered to win a free monthly pass. Through Metrolink social media pages, riders will also have the opportunity to enter a giveaway for tickets to two environmental-themed events: Cirque du Soliel's OVO and the California Poppy Festival. For free bike rides, select '1-Ride' at any Metro Bike Share kiosk, online, or in the Metro Bike Share app and enter the promo code 042222. Metro said that it is aiming to make its entire bus fleet zero emission by 2030, and the Orange Line is already running on only zero-emission buses.
