CHICAGO — One person was killed, and two others were injured on Tuesday when a portion of a house in Chicago's East Garfield Park neighborhood collapsed and fell on the three men who were sitting on the porch of the home. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said that Anthony Wright, 52, was killed in the incident, which took place in the 3400 block of West Jackson Boulevard around 4 p.m. Two other men, ages 32 and 68, were both taken to a local hospital with injuries. Officials told reporters on Tuesday that bricks from the structure fell onto the porch and crushed the men who were sitting there. ABC 7 reported that the home, which is owned by a nurse who has worked through the COVID-19 pandemic, had failed two previous inspections and that in 2015, a report revealed more than a half dozen building code violations, the station reported. Inspectors at the site were working to see if the building is stable enough to remain in place or needs to be demolished. In a statement, the building department said it was working to determine the partial collapse of the home. "(The department) wants to express condolences to those impacted by this horrible tragedy. The City is working to abate the dangerous conditions and will be onsite throughout the evening to remove any unstable portions of the building. As the investigation continues, the buildings department will develop a clearer picture of what occurred and provide updates accordingly."
