This is National Library Week and this year's theme is "Connect with Your Library," which is meant to highlight libraries as places to connect to technology, services, resources, programs, ideas, classes and books! Libraries also connect communities to each other. During April, the Library is holding a Library Card Design Contest for all ages. Winning designs will become limited edition Fargo Public Library cards. Library staff will select the finalists and the public will vote on the final winning designs, which will be announced in June. Residents have started moving into the Mercantile building downtown, with 50 of the 100 apartments already leased. The Mercantile building also includes main floor commercial and will house a Police substation. The building is attached to the Mercantile parking garage, which opened in November 2020. The Planning Department was nominated by United Way for the Power of Partnership Award for 2022. This award goes to a company or person who personifies collaboration by extending their hearts, minds, dollars and/or goods to further the mission of United Way in an invaluable and immeasurable way. The work is in recognition of the City's role in allocation of HUD funds and CARES funds for work in the prevention and diversion program, which was initiated in 2020, as an effort to keep people out of homelessness. On March 27, the Fargo Police Department hosted K-9 Detector Training and Certification for 18 teams of handlers and canines from across North Dakota and Minnesota. The certification consisted of in-depth training for narcotic detection in vehicles and in rooms. All of the Fargo Police Department's canine teams passed their certification. The certification also included a competition for those who attended, and Fargo Police Sgt. Samuel Bollman and his K9 partner, Blue, took first place overall with a score of 199 out of 200. Detective Bret Witte and K9 Kilo were presented with a plaque for winning the "Case of the Quarter" award for the 4th quarter of 2021 by Region 12 of the US Police Canine Association and they also received several medallions for involvement in other significant cases in 2021. The LexisNexis Desk Officer Reporting System, a new online reporting system from the Fargo Police Department, is now available to the public. The community online reporting system enables agencies to collect minor incident reports from the public online or through a mobile device. Tonight, we have a video honoring Finance Director Kent Costin, who retired on April 1st after 35 years of service to the City of Fargo. Congratulations, Kent, and happy retirement!
