Contract Rate: $40.12 per hour (as of 4/1/22). JOB PURPOSE: Under general supervision of the Fleet Supervisor and oversite and direction of the Fleet Shop Foreman. The Fleet Mechanic supports Fleet Services operations by, performing highly skilled mechanical work to repair and maintain gasoline, diesel and electrically powered fleet cars, trucks, construction, and other power operated equipment including utility digger derricks, cranes, and bucket trucks. Considerable initiative and independent judgment are exercised in completing assigned duties to ensure the safety and operability of District-owned equipment. May occasionally be required to work various shifts and callouts in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement. JOB FUNCTIONS: 1. Performs highly skilled mechanical work in the maintenance repair, and modification of District-owned or operated vehicles and equipment. Operates vehicles and power-operated equipment, makes tests to locate defects in operation of vehicles and equipment, checks on repairs before returning equipment to service. 2. Performs light to heavy duty diagnosis, troubleshooting and repairs of auxiliary hydraulic systems, such as pumps, valves, hoses, and other components used in complex hydraulic systems. Performs on board computer diagnostic evaluation and electrical system troubleshooting. Performs routine maintenance on PUD vehicles when required, including minor and major tune ups and repairs. 3. Performs a wide variety of repairs to all types of vehicles and construction equipment. Performs diagnosis and repair to both hydraulic and air brake systems, cooling systems, and steering & suspension systems. 4. Overhauls and services assemblies and accessories, such as engines, axles, transfer-cases, multi-speed transmissions, compressed air, vacuum and electric controls, systems, and components. Performs vehicle and equipment up-fitting, fabrication, and in-service testing. 5. Assists other Mechanics when necessary. May perform work on small engine and equipment. Non-Critical welding as required 6. Maintain the garage work area and shop trucks in a clean and orderly fashion. QUALIFICATIONS: The qualifications listed below are representative of those required, but reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Post-Secondary Education: No post-secondary education required. Completion of specialized technical training in automotive and/or truck repair is preferred. Experience: Typically requires five (5) years of diversified technician level experience in automotive, light, medium and heavy-duty diesel and gas trucks and power operated equipment experience or the equivalent combination of education, experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Experience must include three (1) years of welding and light fabrication. Completion of specialized technical training in automotive and/or truck repair with a light diesel certificate is preferred. Requires CPR Certification and valid First Aid card within 90 days of hire. Specific KSA's: A fully skilled incumbent will have the following specific knowledge, skills, and abilities: Knowledge: • Knowledge of construction, design, repair, and adjustments on all common types of vehicles and power operated equipment • Knowledge of hydraulic systems; including pumps, system design and testing, proper repair and adjustment procedures on common types of hydraulic components Skills & Abilities • Ability to diagnose defects and failures on vehicles and power operated equipment for both hydraulic and air brakes, engine and transmission diagnostics, suspension, steering, heating and air conditioning, engine performance on both gasoline and diesel engines • Ability to work on a range of vehicles from passenger cars to Class-8 trucks and trailers • Ability to perform wielding and cutting operations as well as have the ability to perform fabricating and refurbishing applications • Ability to instruct, use and safely operate a wide variety of hand and power tools associated with the automobile/heavy equipment trade • Ability to plan and conduct job related training, provide guidance, and establish harmonious working relationships with coworkers and others • Good verbal and written communication skills • Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships and interact with internal and external customers • Ability to understand and carry out detailed oral and written instructions • Must possess (or obtain within 1 year of employment) and maintain three (3) Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications in automotive brakes, medium/heavy truck brakes and preventive maintenance inspection; and a Fluid Power Society (FPS) certification - Mobile Hydraulic Mechanic. Safety-sensitive positions are subject to pre-employment drug screening. An essential function of this job involves duties which categorize this position as safety-sensitive. A valid driver's license is required for this position (verified upon hire). A valid Washington State driver's license is required within 30 days of employment. Required to possess and maintain a valid Washington State Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with the air brake restriction removed. If a CDL is required or is requested by the District on a voluntary basis, the individual will be subject to the applicable federal regulations, which include random drug testing.
