ROCKVILLE, MD — Despite his projected loss in Maryland, President Donald Trump gained a little bit of support in Maryland in the 2020 election. Four years earlier, he carried 33.9 percent of the the state's vote. But this time around, he captured 34.9 percent of voters. So how did Trump's support in Montgomery County compare with his vote totals in 2016, when he was running against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton? According to the Montgomery County Board of Elections, Trump lost support in Montgomery County in 2020. In 2016, he earned 92,704 votes compared to 59,336 votes in 2020. Tuesday's vote climaxed a heated battle for control of the White House, unfolding during a pandemic that killed nearly a quarter of a million Americans before Election Day. Trump had struggled to overcome polling deficits in key states in the campaign's final days. He ran strong as expected in rural areas, but lost support among other critical voting groups, including suburban women in several battleground states. CNN reported in October that polling put Biden up by 25 points among women voters. According to the final 2016 pre-election polls, Clinton won women voters by 13 points among likely voters and 14 points among registered voters.
