Description
ROCKVILLE, MD — A transfer station that collects hazardous materials in Rockville caught on fire Sunday night, according to fire officials.
Fire department spokesman Pete Piringer said the blaze at 16191 Frederick Rd. was first reported by a security guard around 6:45 p.m. A HAZMAT response team was called to help, and nobody was injured.
"We got here and had a nice little fire going in the storage area where they collect hazardous materials. In this case, it was batteries — mostly car batteries," Piringer said. "There may have been lithium-ion batteries close by, as well."
He added that the fire did spread to nearby palettes and fencing, but was quickly contained.
