Photo Memorial Display In Rockville Honors Lives Lost To Overdose

ROCKVILLE, MD — A group of parents who have lost children to overdose and addiction has created a photo memorial display in Rockville in honor of National Recovery Month. The display, organized by S.O.U.L. (Surviving Our Ultimate Loss), calls attention to Montgomery County residents who died from an overdose. It replaces the annual International Overdose Awareness Day event usually held in late August. In addition to memorial photos, the display includes a section called "Voices for Recovery," which features messages from people who have struggled with drug addiction. There is also information on treatment and recovery resources, as well as information about the county's virtual Naloxone training. In June, there were 12 overdose deaths in the county and 245 nonfatal opioid-related overdoses, according to county officials. Thirty-nine lives were saved by Naloxone, an opioid overdose-reversing drug. The visual memorial will be on display for the public through the end of September.
