ROBBINSVILLE, NJ — Concerns about the coronavirus have forced the move of some of the state basketball championship games scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association announced Wednesday that the group championships for the boys basketball tournament now are scheduled for Phillipsburg High School, after Rutgers University canceled all outside events on campus due to concerns about the spread of the virus.
Rutgers announced the cancellations Tuesday when it announced it was moving to remote instruction for all of its classes until April 3.
The NJSIAA said the group semifinals that are taking place Wednesday and Thursday are being played as scheduled. The girls group finals are still scheduled to be held at the RWJ Barnabas Health Arena at Toms River High School North.
The schedule for the NJSIAA boys championships is as follows:
The Non-Public Group Finals will be played at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m on Saturday.
The Public Group Finals will be played on Sunday, with the first session games at noon and 2 p.m., and the second session games at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets will be $5 for adults and $3 for students/seniors, per session.
People who purchased advance tickets to the boys group championships at Rutgers will be contacted by Rutgers and their money will be refunded, the NJSIAA said.
