TOMS RIVER, NJ — The Toms River East football team has been sidelined due to coronavirus-related issues, school district officials confirmed Wednesday.
The statement from Toms River Regional Schools spokesman Mike Kenny did not specify the nature of the issues, but said the team is suspended from on-field activity.
"It is anticipated that the team will reconvene Friday, Oct. 2," the statement said.
Toms River East is scheduled to play at Jackson Liberty High School in the opening game of the abbreviated season. It's not clear when or whether the game will be made up.
Kenny said the football programs at Toms River South and Toms River North are not affected and are continuing to practice.
Toms River North and Toms River South are set to square off at the Indians' field on Oct. 2.
