NEWTON, MA — Newton resident Veronica Burton was selected seventh overall by the Dallas Wings in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) Draft Monday night, reported WCVB. Burton, a 5-foot-9 point guard, played first at Newton South High School followed by Northwestern University. She is the fourth Northwestern player ever to be chosen in the WNBA draft and was one of only 12 players who were invited to this year's WNBA draft. In her senior year at Northwestern, Burton served as a team captain, putting up 17.8 points and 6.4 assists per game and averaging 5.5 rebounds per contest. She also won the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year award three times and the 2022 Women's Basketball Coaches Association National Defensive Player of the Year award after leading the nation with 4.03 steals per game. Burton is the daughter of WBZ sports director and former Northwestern quarterback Steve Burton and Northwestern competitive swimmer Ginni Burton. She is also the granddaughter of Boston Patriots player Ron Burton.
