HAMDEN, CT — Legendary area coach and community contributor Sam Burrell died Monday at the age of 89, according to the New Haven Register. Burrell was a volunteer for many organizations in the area and was a past president of the Walter Camp Foundation and the Southern Connecticut Diamond Club. "It is with great sadness we announce the passing of long-time legendary member and Past President Sam Burrell," the Walter Camp Foundation wrote in a post on Facebook. "Burrell was dedicated to his family and his community. The iconic Burrell recently celebrated his 50th anniversary as a WCFF member. "Details regarding funeral services will be announced. "Rest in peace Sam." Burrell, who served more than two decades on the Hamden Legislative Council, helped start and run the popular "Stay In School" Rally that is a staple of Walter Camp weekend, according to the Register. Scott Burrell, the former UConn basketball great and current coach at Southern Connecticut State University, told the Register his father was a legend who taught him "not just about sports lessons, but about life lessons."
