Riverside School Celebrates Earth Day With Week Full Of Activities

GREENWICH, CT — Riverside School will celebrate Earth Day this entire week with a series of activities. Each day of the week, students will participate in a green-themed activity. On April 11, students brought lunch from home and were encouraged to pack a waste-free and meatless meal. The cafeteria will be offering a meatless option as well. On Tuesday, there will be grade-by-grade nature scavenger hunt lead by Green Schools and Riverside School volunteers. The celebration continues Wednesday where students will get creative and participate in a no-sew tote bag activity raising awareness of the environmental impact of "fast fashion." "We are thrilled to see Earth Week continue at Riverside School," said Principal Christopher Weiss in a news release. "Students, staff and families continue their commitment in their everyday actions to reduce our environmental impact and waste." Earth Week will conclude on April 14 where students will attend different stations to learn more about environmental impacts. Representatives from local organizations such as the Greenwich Tree Conservancy will be on site to educate children in grades K-5. Quiet Yards Greenwich will in attendance to help the students learn about backyard ecosystems and the role that oysters play in supporting the aquatic ecosystem. Old Greenwich Honey will display various bee keeping equipment and hand-out materials to educate students on why bees are so important to the earth. Riverside School is considered to be a CT Green Leaf School by the COEEA. The program awards organizations that have made significant progress towards making their schools greener, as well as those who are just beginning. Over the past several years, Riverside School has participated in the NexTrex Plastic Film and Recycling Program and America Recycles Day, and has held many drives for used books, coats, costumes and textiles.
