PITTSBURGH, PA — Hours before the Pirates home opener Tuesday, the team signed third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes to an eight-year contract extension through 2029. The Pirates also have a 2030 option.
The contract is worth $70 million and is the largest in team history, according to Robert Murray of Fansided.
Hayes, 25, is one of the best defensive third basemen in baseball. He was named the Fielding Bible Award winner at the position l after his 16 defensive runs saved ranked first among third basement and tied for seventh among all players in Major League Baseball according to the Fielding Bible.
"Ke'Bryan is the type of core player who is a winner on the field, a leader in the clubhouse and engaged in our community. He is the type of player who makes a true difference in the direction of our organization," Pirates owner Bob Nutting said in a statement.
Hayes was the 32nd overall pick in the supplemental first round of the 2015 draft. He made his Pirates debut in September 2020.
