LAKE COUNTY, IL — The wife of disgraced police lieutenant Joe Gliniewicz, who killed himself in 2015 and made it look like a homicide, is set to be sentenced on Tuesday. Melodie Gliniewciz is accused of helping her husband steal thousands of dollars from the Fox Lake Police Department's Explorer's post. They used the money to pay for movie tickets, a trip to Hawaii, porn websites and restaurant charges, authorities say. In February, Melodie Gilniewicz pleaded guilty to a deceptive practices charge as part of a plea deal, which included dropping ten other charges in the case. Authorities say Melodie's former husband, Joe Gliniewicz, killed himself on Sept. 1 but made it look like he'd been killed in the line of duty. His motive, according to authorities, was to stave off allegations surrounding the missing funds from the Explorers post. Melodie could face up to three years in prison but also could be sentenced to probation. Gliniewicz's attorneys are arguing Melodie be sentenced to second-chance probation, which is an option for some first time offenders and could mean, if she completes requirements for the probation, her case could essentially be dismissed, Don Morrison, an attorney for Kelleher + Holland LLC and who is part of Gliniewicz's legal team, told the Daily Herald. Typical felony probation would mean the conviction could be on her record for the rest of her life, according to the article.
