WORCESTER, MA — You could say Tuesday's Worcester Red Sox home opener is the first real home opener in team history. When the WooSox hit the field one year ago, capacity at Polar Park was limited due to the coronavirus pandemic, and some parts of the stadium were still under construction. A year later, the team will take the field Tuesday against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs in a more complete Polar Park. There are no capacity limits this year, and the park has added new features — like a walking path that circles the whole stadium, and a grass berm seating section in right field. Here's what to know about Tuesday's WooSox home opener: Time, Opponent The first pitch will be thrown at 3:05 p.m., and fans can expect special festivities to celebrate opening day. The WooSox are coming off a winning 5-1 series last week against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. The IronPigs are 3-3 after a split series last week with the Columbus (Ohio) Clippers. What's New In 2022 Newcomers and returning fans will see new features at the park this season. The Sausage Guy from Fenway Park will have a stand, and there's a new parking garage (more below). Weather The New England weather gods are smiling on the WooSox. Temperatures will reach the mid 60s by the 3:05 p.m. game time. There will be rain, but just a slight chance of showers before 1 p.m., according to forecasts. Tickets There were still seats available Monday evening, but only a handful in choice spots near home plate and along the 1st and 3rd baselines. Find tickets on the WooSox website. Parking Parking at Polar Park was a bit of a challenge for the team and the city during the inaugural season, with some fans occupying the few street parking spaces in the Canal District, blocking access to local businesses. This year, a new parking garage directly across the street from Polar Park will be available with 350 spaces in addition to the other nearby garages. The new garage costs $22, but drivers can reserve spots ahead of time. Transit Alternatives Polar Park is walking distance to Union Station (just under 1 mile), where you can catch MBTA commuter rail trains. And all Worcester Regional Transit Authority buses are free and will remain free through the end of the 2022 season. Any WRTA bus will take you to the Foster Street bus hub, which is also less than a mile from Polar Park.
