SUMMIT, NJ — The Union County Clerk posted updated (but still unofficial as now) numbers Saturday in the Summit Common Council race, with 100 percent of districts reporting. However, the clerk said there may be more updates Monday with more vote-by-mail numbers. Certification of the results will take place by Nov. 20. With 100 percent of districts reporting: Incumbent Democrat Susan Hairston was far ahead of her Republican challenger, Eileen Kelly, for the 1st Ward Common Council seat. Hairston had 61 percent of the vote, or 2,561.Kelly had 1,608 votes.There were three write-in votes. That race was the only contested race at the local level in Summit. In the uncontested race for a 2nd Ward council seat, incumbent council president Marjorie Fox, a Democrat, had 3,268 votes. There were 54 write-ins. How Union County voted: President and marijuana Tuesday's elections drew an impressive 41 percent of registered voters in Union County, with 152,634 people voting out of 372,854. With 100 percent of districts reporting: In Union County, 71 percent of the votes, or 106,913, went for President-Elect Joe Biden. Another 28 percent of the votes, or 42,032, were for President Donald Trump. Libertarian Jo Jorgensen won 637 votes, and a write-in candidate grabbed 517.
