SUMMIT, NJ — Two families have lost almost all their belongings in a fire on Morris Avenue in Summit on Thursday evening.
The Summit Fire Department responded around 5:42 p.m. to the report of the fire, at 220-221 Morris Ave.
"On arrival, firefighters found a fully involved two-family house engulfed in flames and smoke," according to the Fire Department.
"Our crews were able to quickly contain the three-alarm fire to the point of origin without extension to neighboring homes," said Fire Chief Eric Evers. "The fire was contained at 7:12 PM. There were no reported injuries to residents or responding firefighters."
However, two families were left without homes. The Red Cross has put them up temporarily, said a city official.
A family friend has begun a fundraiser, linked here.
Other residents offered in a thread in a Summit Facebook group to donate items.
"My friends who lived in 220 Morris Ave sadly lost everything yesterday to a fire," she wrote. "They are two families, if someone wants to help them it will be a blessing!! There are 4 kids in total who lost everything, the only things they saved were the things they had on!!!"
The Summit Police Department and Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad assisted at the scene. Mutual aid was provided by Cranford, Hillside, Millburn, New Providence, Springfield, Union, and Westfield fire departments. Station coverage was provided by the Berkeley Heights, Mountainside, and Plainfield fire departments.
The fire is being investigated by the Summit Fire Department Investigation Unit.
