PERRY HALL, MD — Gunpowder Elementary School has launched a memorial project to honor Officer Amy Caprio. She was killed May 21, 2018, in Perry Hall in the line of duty. A Facebook page called the Officer Amy Caprio Playground Project was launched recently to provide updates on the initiative. According to the page, the PTA at Gunpowder Elementary School is overseeing the project, which will breathe new life into the playground and hardtops on the tennis and basketball courts on campus. The PTA acknowledged that Caprio's work helped keep the school children safe. Caprio was run over by a teen who was part of a group burglarizing homes on Linwen Way. Four teens have been sentenced for her murder. Three received life sentences with all but 30 years suspended. The driver who ran over the officer was given life with the possibility of parole. "On May 21, 2018, Officer Caprio lost her life in the line of duty protecting the citizens of Baltimore County," according to the Officer Amy Caprio Playground Project page. "More specifically, her brave actions and ultimate sacrifice protected the children that attend Gunpowder Elementary School." Gunpowder Elementary School is about 1 mile from Linwen Way, where Caprio was hit, when one teen ran her over in an attempt to get away.
