EAST HAVEN, CT - They are dedicated to ensuring that schools are safe for students and staff. But they wanted to do more. The 20 members of the East Haven schools custodial, maintenance and security union have come together to do what they can to help families in need this Thanksgiving by donating turkey day meals with all the fixings to two families from each of the district's schools. "We are working long hours to COVID-clean every night and as it's a long task," Vincent Borzillo Sr. said. The secretary of UPSEU Local is a parent of five children all attending East Haven schools. "This work needs to be done to keep our staff and students as safe as possible," he said. "It's an important job that we take pride in." But doing that job, as vital and rewarding as it is, was not enough to show the community just how important griving back is, he said. "With the holidays coming up, we want to help our community." The union is working with the principals of all East Haven public schools to identify families that are most in need, Borzillo said. Then, Saturday, on the Town Green, they'll distribute the meals to the "most deserving" of families. They chose the Town Green to "minimize contact at their homes." Borzillo said that the custodians and maintenance staff, many parents, "handle our tasks as if their kids were in the schools as well."
