SECAUCUS, NJ — Make way for ducklings! Secaucus volunteer firefighters showed once again there is no job too big — or too small — when they rescued a family of newborn ducklings from a storm drain last week. The rescue happened last Thursday on Grace Avenue at Hagan Place. The ducklings appeared to be very young, possibly just born, and their mother duck was standing right near the storm drain, crying to them, said Edna Schoenrock-Rizzo, who first called Secaucus police about the ducklings. "My husband came across them walking our dog. A woman from Grace Ave. (I don't know her name) was at the storm drain trying to get them out," said Schoenrock-Rizzo. "She said they were born in her yard and fell in, and the mother was nearby crying." The woman said her husband came home and told her and their daughter. "We all went to try to help the woman get them out. I then called the police department and messaged the mayor," she said. "Around 10 minutes later, DPW came followed by the fire department." They pried open the sewer grate and a Secaucus volunteer firefighter entered the drain and removed all the ducklings. All the ducklings were safely taken out of the storm drain. Firefighters put them in a bag and took them to the kayak launch at Mill Creek Point Park. What's even more amazing about this story is that the mother duck flew above the fire truck and landed in the water at Mill Creek Point just as her baby ducklings were being released into the water, said Secaucus Mayor Mike Gonnelli.
