Celebrate AAPI Heritage Month at our event series featuring the historical contributions and experiences of Monterey Bay's Chinese community NOTE: 1. All events are free and open to the public. There is limited capacity so please use the Eventbrite to register to attend our speaker series and the Walk of Remembrance. 2. To ensure the health and safety of all, we require masks for all our indoor events, unless you are eating or drinking, and recommend mask wearing for outdoor activities. Celebrate AAPI Heritage Month! Learn more about the historic Chinese who settled in Pacific Grove at the turn of the century, pioneering the fishing industry and contributing to the natural history and economic development of the region. Chinese Historical Society Exhibit: Remembering 1882: Fighting for Civil Rights in the Shadow of the Chinese Exclusion Act Friday, April 15, 2022-Sunday, May 15, 2022 Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History 165 Forest Ave., Pacific Grove, CA 93950 In 1882 Congress passed the nation’s first immigration legislation – a law to prevent people of Chinese descent from entering the United States. This exhibit – produced by the Chinese Historical Society of America – explores the Exclusion Act from its origins, through its full repeal in 1968, the civil rights struggle of Chinese Americans, and the historic importance of habeas corpus in the Chinese American community. This important and enlightening traveling exhibit will be displayed in the main gallery of the museum from April 15 to May 15 in support of the Walk of Remembrance. Russell Jeung is a professor of Asian American Studies at San Francisco State University and co-founder of the Stop AAPI Hate coalition. The coalition tracks and responds to incidents of hate, violence, harassment, discrimination, shunning, and child bullying against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States. Its mission is to advance equity, justice and power by dismantling systemic racism and building a multiracial movement to end anti-AAPI hate. Mr. Lydon, beloved local historian and author of Chinese Gold , is an instructor at Cabrillo College and writer. Walk of Remembrance - Honoring Pacific Grove's Pioneering Chinese Fishing Village Community Please register Saturday, May 14, 2022 1:00PM - 4:00PM Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History to Stanford Hopkins Marine Station Please join us for the main event, a one mile walk from Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History to Hopkins Marine Station, site of the Point Alones Chinese Fishing Village before it was mysteriously burned to the ground. This act displaced hundreds of Chinese from their homes and livelihoods, as they lost all of their worldly possessions. We will gather in front of the museum for the Monterey Bay Lion Dance Troop performance and remarks from elected officials, then walk via the Coastal Recreation Trail to the Chinese fishing village site where there will be Stanford archaeological exhibits and a talk with preservationists. Whaler's Cabin Docent Tour Sunday, May 15, 2022 10:00 AM- 2:00 PM Point Lobos State Nature Preserve, Whaler's Cabin Please join us for a docent tour of the whaler's cabin. Learn about the history of Chinese whalers and pioneering Chinese woman, Quock Mui on Point Lobos. Parking and space limited. Some walking required.
