APEX Motor Club - Maricopa, Arizona
The project scope included a 2.3-mile circuit with a 3,400-foot straight-away, as well as a helicopter landing pad. Materials for this project had 45,000 tons of concrete base material, 18,000 tons of that material included recycled concrete base. 14,000 tons of the material was specially formulated asphalt, designed by Sunland specifically for this track. The surface tolerance for this project was 1/8 of an inch on a 16-foot straight edge. It was the first time a surface course of that size was paved in one shift. Sunland’s paving process for this project was unique due to a technique called echelon paving. This technique entails three pavers, three material transfer vehicles, 20 rollers, 50 dump trucks, and a crew of 47 Sunland employee and owners running continuously on a daily basis.
Please join us as Sunland Asphalt's Director of Operations, Michael Thompson and Senior Project Manager, Immanuel Martinez talk to us about challenges faced with the construction of running a staggered paving operation to provide a smooth track for many to enjoy and what the future looks like for additional race tracks.
