IST # 32113 - Soil Moisture Sensing Technologies
Soil moisture is an important factor used in irrigated agriculture to make decisions regarding irrigation scheduling. With accurate monitoring of soil moisture, producers can avoid both excessive and insufficient irrigation. Novel sensing technologies are required to determine crop water status and conduct irrigation scheduling. Various types of soil moisture sensors (SMS) are commercially available for monitoring soil water status and scheduling irrigation events, including AgIoTs/web platforms for faster data gathering and interpretation. This IST will focus on training extension agents, growers, and the public about the existing and new soil moisture sensor technologies including soil moisture data AgIoTs, data management tools, and phone and web-based irrigation scheduling platforms.
