BRADENTON, FL — A 58-year-old Bradenton man was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for manufacturing counterfeit currency. Anthony Wayne Smith has also been ordered by U.S. District Judge Virginia Hernandez Covington in Tampa to forfeit a firearm and ammunition found during a search of his home, according to a Department of Justice news release. Smith pleaded guilty to the charges against him Jan. 14. He faced a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. According to his plea agreement, he made counterfeit U.S. Federal Reserve notes at his Bradenton home, the DOJ said. While searching his home, investigators found a large quantity of counterfeit notes hidden throughout the residence, texturized printing paper and printers. His laptop also contained digital images of U.S. Federal Reserve notes that had been used in the production and manufacture of the counterfeit bills, according to the DOJ.
