The road is a dangerous place to be. Not only are you at risk from a multitude of fast-moving objects, you can only control your own actions in terms of ensuring safety, which leaves the big variable of other people's actions to contend with. In the unfortunate event that you are involved in a motor vehicle accident, your seat belt may be all that stands between you and death or injury, so next time you take your vehicle in for a car service, make sure to request they give the Seat belt a little bit of attention as well to keep them in good working order--every 6 months is a good frequency with which to check up on them. In the meantime, there are several things that you can do in terms of maintenance to ensure your seat belts perform at their best when you most need them: Cleaning Seat belts should get a clean along with the rest of the car whenever you wash it. Vacuum in and around their receptacle so that it does not become clogged with dirt and grit, which could potentially affect its ability to lock in properly and protect you in a crunch. Also, you should clean the belt itself, taking care not to use any products that could potentially weaken or fray the material. Having clean seat belts is not only about safety - no one likes to emerge from a car to realize their seat belt has left a big dirty mark on their shirt! Adjust the Straps Most modern cars will have adjustable height connectors so that you can change the setting depending on the height of the driver. If your car has multiple drivers, a simple but important safety tip is to re-check the seat belt height whenever you get into the car. It takes only a second, but your seat belt will function the most effectively if it is set to your exact specifications. Baby Capsule If you have a baby capsule, or are having one fitted, it is vitally important that you have the work done by a professional and that you don't make any changes to it. A child's car seat will usually have easy-to-follow instructions and can be fitted by parents but when it comes to an actual baby capsule, there is no room for mistakes and you need to make sure that it is securely and safely fitted. Check Straps Regularly Another important maintenance activity is to check the straps regularly to see that they are not becoming frayed, brittle, or kinked. If this is the case get them replaced as soon as possible--your seat belt only gets one chance to do its job properly. 65% of road deaths happen because people are not wearing seat belts - this should be an indication of the important role they play in safety. Making sure that they function well enough to protect you is just as important as wearing one in the first place
