MARLBOROUGH, MA — A developer linked to projects across the regions wants to build a mixed-use development in Marlborough's French Hill neighborhood, according to plans submitted this week to City Council. The 276-unit apartment building would sprout from a vacant lot at the north corner of Mechanic and Lincoln streets. The development would be between four and five stories, feature commercial space on the first floor and have about 448 indoor parking spaces, according to plans. The developer behind the project is Wood Partners, whose "Alta" branded developments have sprouted up across the region in recent years. The French Hill development would be dubbed Alta Marlborough. Wood Partners is wrapping up work on Alta Oxbow, a partially affordable apartment development along Route 20 in Wayland for people over age 55. The company also built the Alta Union House building in Framingham, and is beginning work on an Alta building in Worcester along Mulberry Street. The Alta Marlborough building would be located along a corridor that is being upgraded thanks to a $2 million MassWorks grant awarded in 2019. Wood Partners is seeking a special permit from the Marlborough City Council to move forward with the mixed-use project. The Council will discuss the proposal at a meeting set for Monday night.
