BALTIMORE, MD — A Perry Hall volunteer was honored Monday at the Baltimore Orioles home opener at Camden Yards, where the Os defeated the Milwaukee Brewers, 2-0. Richard Suehle was one of four people designated as Birdland Community Heroes recognized at Monday's game. All are volunteers with Meals on Wheels. Suehle has volunteered with Meals on Wheels for 38 years. He started delivering food in the Woodlawn area when he was working for the Social Security Administration in 1983. A veteran, he says he has enjoyed meeting and helping people, particularly veterans, who share their stories with him. After he retired in 1999, Suehle wanted to continue volunteering. In 2000, he began volunteering at a site closer to his home in Perry Hall, according to a statement from the Orioles. He also began involving Perry Hall High School students, officials said. When that program ended, he shifted and now works through the St. Anthony site in Baltimore, where he volunteers each Wednesday. The other Birdland Community Heroes who were honored include Pamela Cline, Kathi Howard and Stephanie Tyrell. The Orioles Charitable Foundation donated $5,000 to Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland as part of the recognition. Throughout the season, the Orioles recognize those who "distinguished themselves by selflessly working or volunteering in fields that care for, serve, teach, protect, and improve the lives of others, around the corner or around the globe, who are most in need," according to the Community Heroes program.
