Description

Last year, there were 970 crashes involving a teen driver in Austin, Texas alone. Motor vehicle crashes are the second leading cause of death for U.S. teens, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Moreover, among drivers involved in fatal crashes, drivers aged 15-19 were more likely to be distracted than drivers of any other age. Knowing this fact, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Austin Area offer a free safe driving program for area teens. The program is called UPS Road Code and it is a free educational course teaching teenagers how to stay safe on the road and handle unexpected circumstances. This is part of a larger Boys & Girls Clubs of America effort around the country to help keep teens focused, aware and safe while driving since the UPS Road Code program’s inception in 2009. The program is taught by local UPS volunteer instructors through classroom sessions and new, lifelike virtual reality driving technology that just launched here in Austin. The VR headsets were rolled out at the Austin Area Club during the Club’s Teen Night on April 1, 2022. During this launch event, UPS Road Code Ambassador and Austin Club teen, Jarrell B., served as a host and demonstrated the new VR technology. Attendees received a sneak peak of the new VR tech and explored this immersive learning experience on the headsets during this festive teen night. UPS Road Code is offered at Boys & Girls Clubs of the Austin Area and is free and open to all area youth. Those who graduate from this program can enjoy special savings on Insurance from Liberty Mutual as an added bonus. In addition, youth can test their driving knowledge through an online UPS Road Code quiz based on the program curriculum at https://roadcodereportcard.com/.
