PITTSBURGH, PA — PNC Park turns 21 this year, and the Pirates have yet to win so much as a division championship since its opening in 2001. The Bucs on Tuesday kick off another home season of what is expected to be another season of utter futility. PNC Park, however, is widely regarded as one of baseball's best stadiums, and masochistic folks who like bad baseball and overpriced food and beverages will show up for the opener and games all summer - or at least until the Steelers begin training camp in July. Not to be insulting, but a team that won its last World Series in 1979 is kind of insulting to fans, right? Here's what you need to know about the home opener: New stadium dining options inspired by three Pittsburgh restaurants - Coop de Ville and Smallman Street Deli in the Strip District, and Station in Bloomfield - will be available. Those menu items will include a ranch burger, reuben dog and pimento fried chicken sandwich. Bon appetite. If you're thinking of using the Clemente Bridge to get to the ballpark, stop that immediately. The bridge is closed for repairs until late in 2023. First pitch: 4 :12 p.m. Because it's April 12 and 412 is the predominant Pittsburgh area code. Clever, no?Former Pirates infielder Dave Cash once played at Three Rivers Stadium, but cash and currency no longer is accepted at PNC Park. Credit and debit cards as well as Apple-Google Pay will be accepted. A reverse ATM is available to convert cash to a prepaid Mastercard. Fans will not be charged for the service.Former Pirates catcher Manny Sanguillen, who also once played at Three Rivers, will be back for another season of his delectable BBQ. Former Pirates general manager Neal Huntington thankfully is now the problem of the Cleveland Guardians.Current Pirates owner Bob Nutting, who charitably can be labeled as reviled in Pittsburgh, alas is not.Play ball!
