DARIEN, CT — More than 30 street signs have been stolen from Darien roads in recent months, in what authorities believe is an ongoing prank in town. The situation is no laughing matter, however, for town officials because replacing road signs not only costs money for the signs themselves, but also wasted labor reinstalling them around town, writes The Hour. Darien police have launched an investigation into the incidents, and some signs have been recovered in other locations around town. According to police Chief Don Anderson, the act of stealing a road sign would fall under sixth-degree larceny, a misdemeanor, because the signs cost less than $500. "That said, in the case of multiple signs taken in a 'single larcenous transaction,' i.e. all in one night, a higher charge could be levied," Anderson said in a statement to Patch. "Larceny 6th is a Class C misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $500.00 and/or a jail term of up to three months. Obviously, a jail term for a theft of street signs is highly unlikely."
