Press release from San Diego County Sheriff's Department: April 8, 2022 On Friday, 4/8/22 at about 2:48 pm, Sheriff's Communications Center received a "911" call for an ultralight aircraft crash at Skydive San Diego located at 13531 Otay Lakes Road, Otay Mesa. Sheriff's Deputies and the San Diego Fire Department responded. The solo pilot (a 73-year-old male) was conducting a maintenance check flight. Just after takeoff, the pilot began having flight control issues along with strong crosswinds. While attempting to land the aircraft, the crosswind and flight control issues caused the aircraft to crash land sideways on the runway at Skydive San Diego. The aircraft sustained damage to the landing gear and right wing. There was no damage to any other surrounding property. The pilot did not suffer any injuries and refused medical treatment. National Transportation Safety Board and FAA were notified and advised they would respond to conduct their investigation. This press release was produced by San Diego County Sheriff's Department.
