DARIEN, CT — Residents who are interested in serving on the non-partisan Representative Town Meeting still have time to register as a write-in candidate for the Nov. 3 election, according to town officials. A total of 10 seats are available in four districts, One, Four, Five and Six. District One has one available position; District Four has three available positions; District Five has three available positions; and District Six also has three available positions. The deadline to register as a write-in candidate for the RTM is noon on Nov. 2 in the Darien Town Clerk's Office. A write-in candidate must then receive at least 25 votes to be elected. Terms run for two years. "Joining the RTM is a great way to get involved in running your Town," said RTM Moderator Seth Morton in a statement. "The RTM has 100 members and acts as the legislative body for Darien, reviewing and voting on spending plans and monitoring the operation of town government. The RTM meets 7 times a year and does much of its work in specialized committees dealing with finance and budget, education, parks & recreation, public health and safety and others." Added Clara Sartori, president of the Darien League of Women Voters and a longtime RTM member, "The RTM is great training for involvement in Town government. At the same time, you will meet people who have been involved in major Town Boards. The RTM now includes former Selectmen, Board of Education and Commission members. It is a good way to meet other like-minded people. It is public service and an opportunity to influence what happens in Darien."
