DARIEN, CT — Darien property owners again are in line for a bit of a break if a property tax deferment proposal is approved this week.
Under the plan, which part of a new coronavirus relief executive order from Gov. Ned Lamont, residents can defer making property tax payments by 90 days. The taxes still have to be paid, but residents will have longer to pay them.

Lamont's executive order reads in part:
WHEREAS, in recent weeks, COVID-19 infection, hospitalization, and death rates haveincreased in Connecticut, surrounding states, and throughout the country, reinforcing the needfor continued protective measures to limit transmission of the coronavirus; and
WHEREAS, Chapter 204 of the Connecticut General Statutes sets forth tax collection deadlinesthat will be difficult for residential and commercial property owners to meet in light of thesignificant job and economic losses experienced by Connecticut residents and businesses; and
WHEREAS, municipalities have sought relief on behalf of taxpayers affected by the impacts ofbusiness operations being suspended or ceased, layoffs and other complications caused by theCOVID-19 pandemic...
Property taxes typically are due in January and July, so the proposal would push the January payment off by 90 days.
New Canaan announced Monday that it was deferring property tax and sewer fee payments by 90 days.
