BATAVIA, IL — Have documents in need of shredding? The Batavia Rotary Club will host a shredding and recycling event April 30. The club will host its first event of this kind from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Batavia Calvary Episcopal Church, 222 S. Batavia Ave. Though in its inaugural year, organizers said they hope to make it an annual event. "It is a great way for us to serve the community and care for the environment," Terri Dykhuis, an environmental engineer and the club's environmental chair, said in a statement. The shredding day comes about a year after Rotary International added "environment" as one of its areas of focus. Officials said at the Batavia chapter said they have always valued the environment by hosting a regular Main Street Clean Up and participating in the Friends of the Fox River annual clean up. The Batavia Rotary Club is stepping up its game by appointing an environmental chair and initiating events like the shredding and recycling one, according to Dykhuis. At the end-of-April event, people can bring a maximum of three file boxes for secure shredding and batteries — though ones for cars, watches and hearing aids won't be accepted — for recycling. People can also drop off books, CDs, keys and musical instruments for recycling and repurposing. People participating in the shredding event are asked to enter the church's parking lot from Main Street via Water Street.
