DANBURY, CT — The coronavirus infection rate in the city is hovering at 6.8 percent, a very slight dip from when the state Department of Public Health issued a COVID-19 advisory for Danbury last month. Seventeen new, confirmed cases of COVID-19 were reported on Wednesday, according to Mayor Mark Boughton. There were 19 tallied on Tuesday, 5 on Monday, 6 on Sunday, 11 on Saturday and 23 last Friday. In a livestreamed address on Wednesday evening, Boughton implored residents to wear masks and practice social distancing. "You want your kids to go back to playing sports, you want to get the schools open, right where the numbers are now, we cannot open," the mayor said. Danbury led all the towns in the state Wednesday in newly confirmed cases. There were135 new coronavirus cases reported out of more than 11,000 test results statewide on Wednesday, and two more coronavirus-related deaths, which brought the state total up to 4,487. Boughton also announced a testing event on Saturday at Sacred Heart Church on Cottage Street from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Community Health Center offers free testing 9 a.m. to 1 p.m Monday through Friday at 8 Delay Street, and The Greater Danbury Community Health Center at 120 Main Street makes testing available from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays, and for as long as necessary, beginning at 8:30 a.m., on Wednesdays and Fridays.
