Press release from Danbury Library: Nov. 16, 2020 Danbury Library is pleased to announce the distribution of free headphones to local students enrolled in distance learning programs. Beginning on Monday, November 16, any K-12 student enrolled in a distance learning program may receive a free pair of headphones when they sign up for or present a valid Danbury Library card, while supplies last. As students, parents, and educators nationwide continue to refine their approach to distance learning, one local educator noticed an unexpected need right here in the Danbury community. Shannon Turner, a teacher at Pembroke Elementary School, observed that many local students are distracted by noise and activity happening in their homes as they are attending classes online. The solution? Provide increased access to headphones to reduce exterior distractions so that students can improve focus in their virtual classrooms. "Many of my colleagues were facing the same challenges so I decided to create a post on Facebook to ask for headphone donations from the community. I was thrilled to find out The Friends of the Danbury Library wanted to partner with us to further this mission by purchasing headphones for our K-12 students. This contribution will be extremely helpful as we try to support our students and help them stay on task," said Turner. With an enrollment of nearly 11,000 students, Danbury Public Schools is one of Connecticut's largest school districts. In order to assist with the demands of distance learning, Danbury Library will distribute headphones to local students, while supplies last. The headphones were graciously provided by The Friends of Danbury Library, a non-profit, all-volunteer organization working to further the educational and informational needs of the Danbury area through its support of the Danbury Library. Library Cards are available free to all Danbury residents. Parents or legal guardians are responsible for all materials issued on cards for children under age 18 and all fees incurred on those items. As an essential city asset, the Danbury Library is committed to being a welcoming destination, responsive to the needs of our city's diverse community, and a source of inspiration through words and ideas.
