Clinton Crossing Closed Due To Looting Concerns: Report

CLINTON, CT — Clinton Crossing Premium Outlets will be closed this weekend after social media posts alluded to the chance for looting and rioting, the New Haven Register reports. Jersey barriers are placed at all exits and entrances and some stores were already boarded up. The decision to close was made in part by the recommendation of law enforcement. WTNH News 8 reports that police were patrolling the shopping center late Friday. Clinton Police said they were alerted about "numerous social media postings advocating the looting" of the stores. Police in consultation with the FBI's Cyber-Intelligent unit decided it was best to close this weekend. On its website, the shopping center owners condemned George Floyd's death saying they "mourn his senseless loss." "We stand for racial equality and pray for the healing of our communities," the shopping center's owners wrote. Clinton Crossing includes more than 70 businesses and is located off of I-95. Protests have been held throughout Connecticut over the past week in the wake of the death of Floyd in Minneapolis on Memorial Day. Four Minneapolis police officers have been charged criminally in connection with Floyd's death, and protests have taken place around the country. Numerous protests have been held in towns all across Connecticut and some have ended up shutting down highways for periods of time.
