The photo is actually of a boy. The photographer was going through the area quickly and took the photo. Maybe he thought the kid wasn't alive and never followed up on what happened later. All this plus other things he witnessed led him to take his own life. The child did get up before the vulture got to him and he managed to finally get to a red cross tent and got water and a little bit of food. Sad part is that the journalist left behind a wife and newborn baby.
