Description

Have you ever been afraid of going back to your dancing, biking, hiking after injury? Were you not sure if your body was ready to return to your activity? When you did return, did you feel yourself pull back from fully participating in the activity? Being afraid of hurting yourself again can actually increase your chances of doing exactly that. Why is that you ask? Well being afraid to move and fully participate means that: 1. your mind isn't on how to perform the activity effectively (rather it's on the injury) and 2. the mental stress can cause physical tension so your movements are not smooth and free flowing. When you think too much about how you move, your movements become stilted. For instance, when I train you in correcting how you walk, I don't tell you to step on the outside of the heel and then let your foot roll in and then back to the outside of the foot to push-off. I will tell you to strike down with the heel first and then push-off the toe. So I may say, just think to yourself heel/toe. I may even go down to more basics than that and tell you to just think you are 2" taller. Injuries break down your confidences in your bodies. You have to learn to trust not only the experts who have worked with injuries, but also regain the trust in your bodies. Saying all this, your rehab specialist will be able to tell you when you are ready to return. It may not be immediately running 26 miles, or taking an advanced ballet class, or biking 50 miles. But it will be building the foundation again to get to those points. So you may start out running or biking 1 mile or taking a beginner ballet class, but this prepares your body and mind to return to the level of activity you were used to. This becomes your building block or foundation to progress to your goals. And as you build your foundation, you become more confident. Do you need specialist help in returning to the level of activity you are accustomed to? Contact us at 301-493-9257 so we can discuss how we can help. What do you have to lose but your fear of returning to being fully functional? Looking forward to helping you in body and mind.
